12 Moto phones will be updated to Android Oreo, check if yours is in the list

Motorola, Android Oreo

Android Oreo update is coming soon to the Moto phones. Or at least it is coming for 12 Moto phones. Motorola on Thursday in a blogpost confirmed that the Android Oreo aka Android 8 will be soon coming to a number of Moto phones. The list of devices that will get this update include: Moto Z, Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid, Moto Z Play, Moto Z Play Droid, Moto Z2 Play, Moto Z2 Force Edition, Moto X4, Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus, Moto G5S, and the Moto G5S Plus.

Google had released the final version of Android 8 Oreo, which is the latest version of Android, last month. The company, after rolling out the new software said that the Pixel and Nexus phones would be the first devices to get the software update. It later said that the company was also working with other phone makers in order to upgrade some of their devices to Oreo. Motorola, which uses stock aka pure Android, is one of the many phone makers that Google is working with to bring Android Oreo update.

Motorola in its blog post writes that only the listed phones will be upgraded to the new software. But the company has not yet specified when these devices will get the update. There is no time-frame fro now. However, considering the fact that Motorola uses stock Android in its phones and doesn’t add major modifications to Google’s software, usually the company pushes out the update somewhat faster compared to other phone companies.

In the previous years we have seen the Android updates to Moto phones coming in a few months after Google’s final update to its software. “We’re happy to confirm Android 8.0 Oreo will be joining our fleet of Motorola smartphones, starting this fall,” writes Motorola. This means that the software update to the listed Moto phone may come by the end of this month or in October. Obviously, different phones will get the update at a different time. Some may get it early, while some may get the update only around the end of this year.

Broken promise on Moto G4 and the G4 Plus

In the list of Moto phones that are not getting the Android update, there are no Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus, which seems like a strange omission. These hugely popular phones were launched last year and ideally they should have been among the devices slated to get the Oreo update. These are not old phones and they are popular. But then will not get the Oreo unless Motorola changes its mind.

Earlier, read around two years ago, Moto G phones used to get the updates for two years or so. But since last year, Motorola has increased the number of phones it has launched and that could be the reason why it was probably forced to omit the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus from the list of devices getting Oreo update. It is simply impossible to support all Moto phones given the number of phones that are out there right now and hence Motorola probably decided to focus on the 12 devices that it deems most important right now.

Meanwhile, some other smartphone manufacturers have also come out with the list of devices that will get Oreo update. HTC a few weeks ago said that three of its phones would be upgraded to Android Oreo. These are HTC U11, U Ultra and HTC 10. The company added that the roll out would possibly happen by the quarter 4, which means end of this year. The company wrote, “We’re excited to bring Android Oreo to HTC U11, HTC U Ultra, and HTC 10 owners worldwide! Details & additional devices to be announced soon.”

Apart from HTC, OnePlus and HMD Global also confirmed the names of the devices that will get Android Oreo but haven’t revealed the timeline for the update. OnePlus CEO said that its flagship phones — OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T — will get the software update along with the OnePlus 5, which was launched this year. The company also noted that this would be the last update that the OnePlus 3 and the 3T would receive. HMD Global has confirmed that Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and also the recently announced high-end phone — Nokia 8 — will be updated to Android Oreo. All the phones currently run on Android Nougat OS.
