Coupon clipping

Shopping with a limited or set budget is one of the hardest parts of changing old habits. Window shopping and walking through the supermarket, tossing items in the cart and splurging on anything that looks appealing, is easy and tempting. Is that the goal for this year? You will see a difference if you stay focused with your budget and savings plan. You will also see a difference when you coupon with a plan.
This week, when speaking to a couple of new couponers, one question asked was, “What are SmartSource and Red Plum when you reference those coupons?”
SmartSource and Red Plum offer advertising and coupon promotions in newspapers, usually through a weekly or biweekly insert.
The other insert in the newspaper is from Procter and Gamble, which becomes available in the first part of each month.
When manufacturers create new products, or just want to boost sales, they will provide advertising in the form of coupons.
These are located in one of the above inserts. The manufacturers want the consumers to use the coupons in order to try the product. Stores are reimbursed for the coupon price plus handing fee.
The Valentine’s Day items are out in full force and you will see several good sales on flowers and candy. Stores are also promoting sales on specialty meats such as lobsters, shrimp and steaks for that special dinner on the 14th. There are also sales in the bakery department for items like cupcakes.
This is another great week for coupon shopping and purchasing several items at a discounted price.
This is a great month to find reduced prices on meats. As with any major event or holiday, the Super Bowl being a good example in this circumstance, the following week brings a number of clearance items that were unsold for that event or holiday.
As a personal goal I’ve set for myself, I am looking for meat products that are more than 50 percent off.
As you save money with couponing, make sure you take advantage of your savings with the 52-week money saving plan. This is the sixth week of the year and, as such, you would place $6 into your savings program. This leaves a new savings balance of $21 toward your year-end goal of $1,378.
