Experts said here on Thursday that the news that Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC would close its India operations was inevitable due to the company’s inability to adapt to the shifting market dynamics and the rapid expansion of Chinese competitors. According to CyberMedia Research (CMR), it is more of a failure on the part of HTC to judge the competition as well as grasp the market realities.
In the first ten years of smartphones in India, consumers ranked Samsung, Apple, and HTC as the most successful mobile brands, according to a 2017 CMR survey. HTC was named by nearly 78% of those polled as one of the nation’s most recognizable brands. “HTC as innovative it was in technology could not match it with innovations in the business model or execution. The brand either did not participate at all or adopted too late. “Faisal Kawoosa, Head-New Initiatives at CMR, stated in a statement that this was the primary reason for HTC to chart out a different trajectory against the movements in the market.” Chinese brands like Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo have gained a lion’s share of the Indian smartphone market, leaving HTC way behind.
