Apple iOS 12.1.2 Has A Serious Cellular Data Problem

After a promising start, iOS 12.1.2 is going from bad to worse for iPhone owners and Apple AAPL -0.98%’s legally motivated rush to push out the update needs further discussion as it is now having very serious consequences for many users…

As more and more iPhone owners blindly upgrade to iOS 12.1.2 reports are now flooding in from around the world that it cuts off mobile data services. As such, Apple’s claims that it “Addresses an issue that could affect cellular connectivity in Turkey for iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max” seem ironic given the problem has now expanded to all models of iPhone across all continents.

Apple iOS 12.1.2 is causing serious mobile data problems for users around the worldAPPLE

Tracking complaints on Twitter alone, iPhone owners now suffering from mobile data loss after upgrading to iOS 12.1.2 can be found in North AmericaSouth AmericaEurope and Asia. But the United States appears to be hit particularly hard:

“Thanks @Apple @AppleSupport for the Christmas present…since updating my iPhone to iOS 12.1.2 I can’t access cellular data. I reset my device and now I can’t activate it anymore. No Service. You better fix this in an update soon!” – New York

“@AppleSupport My iPhone X is having WiFi connection issues since I updated to iOS 12.1.2 !!!” – Maryland

“Anyone else lose the ability to use your phone as an actual phone when you upgraded to #iOS 12.1.2 on your #iPhone? What the heck @Apple? I can’t even call @AppleSupport and can’t make a reservation at a #AppleStore until next week!” – Texas

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. India is also badly hit and the complaints are flying in. For example:  123456789101112131415161718192021222324252627282930313233… you get the picture.

So what is Apple doing? There has been no official comment and the company’s official Twitter support is telling users to restart their phones and update carrier settings but, for what I can see, it’s not helping.

The only good news on the horizon is Apple has already started beta testing iOS 12.1.3. The release date is unknown and it again appears to be motivated by legal concerns. Still, it would be astonishing if Apple doesn’t acknowledge and try to fix these mobile data problems at the same time.

But for now, I would strongly suggest you steer clear of iOS 12.1.2. The scale of any iOS problem is always impossible to know given the sheer number of iPhones in circulation, but since iOS 12.1.2 exists primarily as a loophole to get Apple out of a Chinese sales embargo I can’t see any reason why you’d risk your mobile data connection for it?
